This quote is attributed to Dr. Robert E. Lee, a great American soldier and a close friend of General George Washington. Dr.

Lee was an advocate for the poor and abused. He became famous for his efforts to help slaves escape to freedom after the American Revolution. His most famous success was the passage of an 1818 law that freed all slaves in Washington, D.C..

The law also freed the children of slaves that had been born in bondage and raised by slave owners in their households. The slave owner was required to free their children and in turn they were free to support themselves by any means they chose. These laws were part of an effort called "An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery," which was passed in 1775 when the American colonies declared themselves an independent nation from England.
